Alabama Garbage Service Must Face PPP Fraud Retaliation Suit

A former sanitation worker for Alabama-based C.C.S. Garbage Service Inc. adequately alleged that the company violated the False Claims Act by firing him in retaliation for calling attention to alleged Paycheck Protection Program fraud, a federal district court said.

Congress enacted the PPP in March 2020 to provide emergency financial support to those suffering the economic effects caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Shawn Defoe sufficiently claimed that he was fired after he told co-workers he planned to report the company to the government, Judge Liles C. Burke of the US District Court for the Northern District of Alabama said.
