WKRG sports host Simone Eli reported on Friday that former Auburn defensive end Antonio Coleman had been hired as the interim head coach at Williamson High School for the 2022 season. He has been the team’s defensive coordinator for the past six years and will now have the opportunity to be the successor of former Williamson head coach Melvin Pete Jr.
When Williamson athletic director Shumbe Hunter was asked in a press release about Coleman, here is what he had to say:
“Coach Coleman has been a pillar in the Williamson community for some time, Hosting youth camps and serving as a mentor to student-athletes has been a mainstay during his involvement. Relationships that have been built over the years will allow for a smooth transition within the football organization.”
He is no stranger to the Mobile area, as he was once a football player at Williamson High School in the early 2000s before playing his college ball at Auburn. In his four seasons on the Plains, he played in 50 games whiles totaling 151 tackles. Along with that, he also had 46.5 tackles for loss and 24.6 sacks. After his career at Auburn came to an end, he would go undrafted in the 2010 NFL draft. However, he signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent.
He would go on to spend six years in the NFL before retiring in 2015. He played for several other NFL teams like the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals. To go along with that, he also played for two Canadian Football League teams in the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Since his time ended as a professional, he has coached at Williamson. Over the years, he has helped former Auburn cornerback Roger McCreary and current Auburn linebacker Robert Woodyard in preparing them for their futures.
