Man found with multiple gunshot wounds on Birmingham sidewalk dies at hospital

A Sunday afternoon shooting in west Birmingham left one man dead.

Birmingham police and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the victim as Justin Jai Brown. He was 22.

The city’s West Precinct officers responded just before 2 p.m. to a report of a person shot in the 5900 block of Warner Street. That area is near Lipscomb.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said police arrived to find Brown on the sidewalk. He had been shot multiple times.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the victim to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates Brown may have been involved in an argument that led to shots being fired.

No arrests have been made. Police do not believe the shooting was random.

Brown is Birmingham’s 63rd homicide so far this year. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 86 homicides, including the 63 I Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
