Man shot to death at southwest Birmingham apartment complex

An investigation is underway after a man was shot to death at a west Birmingham apartment complex late Thursday night.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Friday identified the victim as Frisco Jackson Dowdley. He was 35 and lived in Birmingham.

The city’s West Precinct officers were dispatched just after 11 p.m. to Alemeda Terrace apartments in the 1700 block of Alemeda Avenue S.W.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers arrived to find Dowdley unresponsive on a walkway near the parking. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

“We believe he was involved in a verbal altercation that led to shots fired,’’ Fitzgerald said.

The suspect had left the area before police arrived.

Just minutes before the homicide, another shooting took place nearby in the 200 block of 18th Street S.W. Fitzgerald said the victim in that case was shot by another man who entered the apartment in which the victim was located.

That victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The two shootings are not related, Fitzgerald said.

Dowdley is Birmingham’s 60th so far this year. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 78 homicides, including the 60 in Birmingham.

Fitzgerald said investigators need anyone who may have seen or heard the altercation to call homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
