This morning, Mobile officials, including Mayor Sandy Stimpson, will host a celebration in Mardi Gras Park in honor of the upcoming World Games in Birmingham.
Though the Games don’t start until July 7, in May, Team Red, White & Blue, a veterans support organization, began the “Old Glory Relay,” according to a press release from the City of Mobile. An American flag that once flew over the United States Capitol has been carried by thousands of veterans through 15 states as part of the relay.
The flag arrived in Mobile last night and will be headed to Pensacola next, before ultimately arriving in Birmingham for the opening ceremony of the World Games.
At 9 a.m., city officials and World Games officials will gather in Mardi Gras Park to celebrate the games and the Old Glory Relay. Then, the flag carriers will travel north on Royal Street as they begin the journey to Pensacola. City officials are inviting people to come to Mardi Gras Park and celebrate the flag, as well as the upcoming World Games.
The World Games will take place over 10 days in venues across Birmingham. Supported by the International Olympic Committee, some of the sports featured include women’s softball, bowling and karate.
