Gomez has been involved with When We All Vote for years. She admitted in October 2020 that the 2020 election was her first time voting herself because she felt like her vote didn’t matter before, as she lives in California, a solidly blue state. “Honestly, I’m not ashamed to say this but I kind of—this was my first time,” she said then. “And I’m going to say that because I never felt—and this is so true, and I’m now like admitting it to people—like my vote counts. Like, every little thing counts so I just think some people get in their head, like, oh well, what does it matter? And then once I really, really started going in and diving in to this, it’s been all I can focus on.”

Gomez, who’s turning 30 on July 22, opened up to The Hollywood Reporter on its Awards Chatter podcast this week on her thoughts about getting older and feeling more empowered in all areas of her life now.

“I am happy getting older,” she started. “I find that my toleration for any sort of discomfort, usually disrespect or whatever, even just unnecessary stuff—I feel so glad that it’s not taking over me anymore. My emotions are mine and I am allowed to feel them however I want to feel them.” She added that she does intend to have a birthday party though: “I am having a party because I was like, ‘You know what? All my friends back home are married with kids, so I’m just gonna throw my own party.’”
