At least two times every year (these days, a lot more than that), we count on Macy’s Friends & Family Sale to deliver major markdowns for everyone in the family and for every inch of the home. Whether it’s fragrances, furniture, fashion, mattresses, kitchen appliances, bedding, beauty, bags, luggage, vacuums or a dozen more categories, we need only shop one store and one sale to score deep discounts. This sale has been popping up a LOT in 2022. We saw it in April 2022 and return in June 2022.
What is the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale?
It’s Macy’s semi-regular sales event and (aside from Black Friday), the most anticipated sale it offers.
The Macy’s Friends & Family sale is beloved because it’s so wide-ranging. Marking down everything in the store up to 30% off, including major designers, sale merchandise and clearance items, definitely gets our attention. However, unlike Black Friday, we aren’t able to mark the calendar a year in advance with the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale dates because they aren’t carved in stone. What we can do is look back at past years to zero in on when the next Macy’s Friends & Family Sale will be and provide a guide for how you can always be in the know, never to miss out on a Macy’s Friends & Family Sale date.
When Are Macy’s Friends & Family Sale Dates?
The summer 2022 Macy’s Friends & Family sale runs June 17-13. Before that, the most recent Macy’s Friends & Family Sale ran late-April until May 1, 2022. Macy’s Friends & Family Sale dates aren’t cast in concrete, however, they tend to follow a pretty clear pattern. Prior to last year, there were two Macy’s Friends & Family Sale dates per year — one in late spring/early summer and the other in December, before Christmas. The Macy’s Friends & Family Sale dates for 2021, however, included an extra sale in late October (and another right after Cyber Monday). The point is, it pays to watch for this sale to pop up when you least expect it!
How Long Does the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale Last?
Just as the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale dates vary, so does the duration. Typically lasting roughly a week, we have seen the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale last as few as six days and as many as 11.
What Makes the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale Special?
Like most retailers, Macy’s offers a variety of sales throughout the year, including their Semi-Annual Sale, One-Day Sale, Black Friday Sale and sales in honor of major holidays.
So, what makes the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale special? Let us explain:
- Regular, sale and clearance items are included: Macy’s Friends & Family Sale includes discounts on not only regular-priced merchandise, but also on sale and clearance items as well. The discount is usually 30%. But it varies. In the past, Macy’s has discounted some categories, such as beauty, an extra 15% whereas we’ve seen swim, jewelry, bedding and serveware marked down as much as 50%. So the savings are real.
- It’s storewide: If you need appliances for the kitchen, toys for the kids, a new mattress for the bedroom, a new vacuum, a wedding gift or even gourmet food, you’ll find every category in the store gets marked down during the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale event.
- Shop over multiple days: Some other Macy’s sales events offer strong discounts as well, but you’ll have less time to take advantage — sometimes just one day. The Macy’s Friends & Family Sale lasts at least a week.
- Discounts you won’t find during other sales: During the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale, you’ll find markdowns on designer items that you won’t see during other Macy’s sales events. We’ve seen discounts on Fitbit, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Coach, UGG, Michael Kors and more while shopping the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale.
What Goes on Sale During the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale?
Although one of the best things about the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale is that it covers all departments, there are some specific categories that we pay particular attention to, for example:
During the spring/summer sale we get excited about discounts on these items:

- Bedding.
- Shoes.
- Outdoor furniture.

During the December sale we look forward to scoring great deals in these categories:

Extra Bonus Points: Macy’s cardholders can earn extra bonus points during the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale.
Bonus Buy: Here’s an example of a Bonus Buy we’ve seen in the past. With any purchase of $25 or more, they gave you the opportunity to purchase a men’s chain bracelet, worth $175, for $24.99. Obviously they change this up, but we usually see at least one item greatly reduced with a minimum purchase of another item.
How to Find out When Macy’s Friends & Family Sale Takes Place
A sale as good as the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale is not something you want to hear about from your friends — after the fact. There was a long period of time when you could circle April on your calendar and feel pretty safe the Macy’s Friends & Family Sale date would land in there somewhere. But Macy’s has been shaking things up as of late. So in order to make sure you don’t miss out, we suggest the following ways for you to know when the next Macy’s Friends & Family Sale will be going down:
- Follow Macy’s on their Instagram account. It’s also a great place to learn about trends and other upcoming events.
- Check out the Macy’s Facebook page. If you spend more time on Facebook than Instagram, no worries. You’ll find the same thing goes here. You can learn a lot about trends, sales, promotions, rewards opportunities and more just by scrolling through a few Facebook posts.
- Download the Macy’s app. In addition to receiving promotions, once you’ve downloaded the app, you’ll have a quick place to refer to when you are deal hunting.
- Sign up to receive Macy’s emails. Yes, inbox overload is a thing. But getting intel on markdowns and sale events is one of the 99 problems we are willing to have.
- Apply for a Macy’s credit card. In addition to an array of rewards, as a Macy’s credit card holder, you’ll always know when the next sale is.
- Sign up for Macy’s Star Rewards. You don’t have to have a Macy’s credit card to be in the know. Join the Macy’s Star Rewards program as a Bronze member and Macy’s will make sure you get dialed into their deals.
- Sign up to receive text messages. Give Macy’s a way to reach out to you via your mobile device, and they will be happy to send you updates and sale information.
