A search is underway for a 30-year-old capital murder suspect who escaped from an Alabama county jail.
Christina Lashay Thurman, is charged in the Aug. 15, 2021, shooting death of Michael Lorenzo Lockhart Jr. Authorities said the two were together in a vehicle when Thurman fatally shot him.
Thurman charged and arrested three weeks after the slaying. Though the crime took place in Choctaw County, Thurman was being held in the Lowndes County Jail.
At 2:18 a.m. Tuesday, according to Central Alabama Crime Stoppers, Thurman maneuvered her way over a recreational fence to make her escape. She is believed to be headed to Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas.
Thurman previously lived in Jackson, Ms. She is the mother to a young son.
In May, records show, Thurman asked for new public defenders, claiming they weren’t doing their best to represent her. In June, her attorneys asked that be moved to the Clarke County Jail so she could be closer to them. A judge did not rule on that motion.
She is now also facing a second-degree escape charge.
Thurman is described as a Black female, 5-feet, 2-inches tall and weighing 128 pounds.
