A 36-year-old father of five who worked for the Alabama Forestry Commission died Wednesday afternoon in a “tragic accident,” the agency said Thursday.
Brett Savage, a 36-year-old communications technician with the AFC and a resident of Deatsville, in Elmore County, was killed instantly when the communications tower he was helping a crew remove unexpectedly fell in Washington County, the commission said.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Brett,” said State Forester Rick Oates. “All of us at the Alabama Forestry Commission are terribly saddened by his loss.”
Savage worked for the agency for three months.
Savage’s brother, Dusty Savage, started a GoFundMe campaign to help the father of five’s family.
“There is no one on earth like him and he was loved by anyone that met him. He adored his wife, Kasey, and was a awesome dad and hero to all of his kids,” wrote Dusty Savage. “I had the privilege of calling him my brother. He was an amazing person and the best little brother anyone could ask for.”
Dusty Savage said his brother’s wife is a stay-at-home mother to the couple’s five children.
“Brett was the sole provider for his family,” he wrote. “Kasey and those babies are gonna need some help financially. Thank you all again for checking on us. Please keep my family in your prayers.”
The GoFundMe has surpassed its $20,000 goal, with nearly $25,000 in donations contributed as of Thursday afternoon.
