Denim shorts are a staple summer shorts. Like jeans, they can be dressed up (by adding, say, a white blouse and heels) or down (with a Nirvana T-shirt and your favorite pair of Converse). Also like jeans, denim shorts come in a huge variety of styles — from cutoff Daisy Dukes to more office-appropriate mid-thigh varieties. Bermuda shorts are having a moment. Also known as long shorts, knee-length shorts or dress shorts, they are basically any kind of shorts that fall about an inch above the knee. Bermuda shorts are the anti-short short, which means you can wear them to the office or on fancier occasions with the right accessories like embroidered or button-down tops, blazers and slide sandals.

Short Shorts
We have a complicated relationship with short shorts. On the one hand, they are fun, flirty and give the illusion of longer legs. On the other, they get kind of a bad rap for being, well, short.
But here’s the good news: most varieties of short shorts can look stylish and flattering if you choose the right cut, fit and materials and pair them with the right top and accessories. A few general rules of thumb include sticking for wider leg openings, keeping your top half reasonably covered and pairing with shorter heels — but in the end, really the only rule is to do you.

High-Waisted Shorts
First, let’s clarify something: The term “high-waisted” is relative, and could mean as high as just below your rib cage and low as above the hip bones. It’s really up to you and what looks good on your torso (as a general rule, longer torsos can handle higher waists, and shorter torsos and larger busts do well with ones below the smallest part of the waist).
In terms of styling, we love pairing high-waisted shorts with crop tops, bralettes and bodysuits. Loose, tucked-in tops look fantastic too! Want an office-appropriate outfit? You can pair high-waisted shorts with heels and even wear them over a pair of tights for a look that is totally twee.

Booty Shorts
The phrases “booty shorts” and “short shorts” are sometimes used interchangeably. For the purposes of this article, however, we’ll make the distinction that booty shorts are usually designed from a stretchy, form-fitting material designed to highlight your booty muscles while letting you move around. For that reason, booty shorts are common among athletes and a frequent site at the yoga, dance and gymnastic studio.
