Hey there,
Computer viruses no longer threaten only things made of ones and zeroes. They can seriously endanger our physical surroundings and even our lives.
In 2020 we witnessed the first death caused by ransomware. This case revealed new levels of ransomware dreadfulness.
The attack began when hackers used ransomware to encrypt the servers of the University Hospital of Dusseldorf. The hack forced personnel to move emergency patients to a hospital in another city around 30 kilometers away.
Due to this transfer, a woman couldn’t receive the much-needed treatment on time and, sadly, passed away.
While hackers sent the decryption key after being informed of the situation, it didn’t save a life.
As a result, the German police opened a homicide case to investigate the situation.
Reports claim that the ransom demand might have been accidental and the intended target was the nearby university. However, even if this is true, it doesn’t make the situation less tragic.
It is not a sole case of a cyber attack against hospitals. These institutions have been attracting cybercriminals for quite a while due to relatively poor security measures and stored sensitive and confidential data.
While hospitals still tighten their security measures, persistent cyber threats seriously cripple their activities. For example, an infamous WannaCry malware resulted in 19000 canceled health appointments in the UK.
2019 saw another cyber attack resulting in a tragic fatality in Alabama, US — a newborn baby eventually died due to botched care because a hospital was struggling with a ransomware attack.
These cases illustrate that cyberattacks go way beyond the virtual realm and are closer to our everyday lives than we imagine. Especially having in mind how reliable we are on connected devices.
So, make sure to take all the necessary precautions — use strong passwords, avoid suspicious links, back up your files, and regularly update your software.
