Teen charged with capital murder in shooting death of Sylacauga man


A 19-year-old was taken into custody Thursday evening in connection with Sylacauga’s first homicide of 2022, which happened last week.

Police Chief Kelley Johnson announced a capital murder against Sheridan Rashon Clark of Talladega. He is charged in the July 1 shooting death 22-year-old Nartavius Cortez Fluker-Smith.

Smith, according to witnesses, was sitting in a Ford Fusion near his residence at 306 South Main Avenue that Friday night when the shooter approached him and opened fire on the vehicle. Smith was taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center sometime after 11 p.m. and was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Johnson, who has not released a motive in the fatal shooting, said Clark was taken into custody at Pineview Apartments in Talladega. The arrest took place at 5:30 p.m.

The suspect was interviewed by investigators and then transferred to the Talladega County Jail. He was being held without bond pending an initial hearing before a judge.

“The Sylacauga Police Department and the victim’s family would like to thank everyone that helped in this case and a special thank you to those that came forward with information from the community that made this arrest possible,’’ the chief said.
