Birmingham police are conducting a homicide investigation Friday after they say a woman died after she was ambushed by a masked gunman shortly after getting into her vehicle in the southwest portion of the city.
Police received a call just after 6 p.m. of an unresponsive person inside a vehicle at Center Street South and Fourth Avenue Southwest, said Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Rod Mauldin.
Officers arrived on the scene, where they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel.
“She was leaving one of the residences in a block nearby when a masked gunman approached and fired several shots into her vehicle, fatally wounding her,” Mauldin said.
The woman drove a short distance before her vehicle came to a stop.
Police are canvassing the area for witnesses to the shooting.
“This was an isolated incident, and it does appear that she was targeted,” Mauldin said.
