Alabama cop gets pistol-whipped by suspect and gets mocked online- TomoNews

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA — An Alabama police officer was pistol-whipped with his own gun on Friday — and then mocked by critics of law enforcement after photos of the incident were posted online.

The plainclothes Birmingham detective, who has not been named, was investigating a series of burglary cases when he stopped a maroon GMC Yukon on Parkway East near Roebuck Plaza. The officer asked the driver to stay inside. As the officer was calling for backup, the driver got out of the vehicle and assaulted the officer.

Police say the driver stole the cop’s gun during the confrontation and pistol-whipped him with it before fleeing with his companion. Pictures of the wounded officer circulated on Facebook and Twitter after the incident. Some posts expressed support for the officer, while others mocked him.

“Pistol pimped his face n um chillen now,” Twitter user @TriggaMane666 posted with a picture of the wounded officer.

Two suspects were arrested later that day. One of the suspects was identified as Janard Cunningham, a 34-year-old who has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1999 that includes breaking and entering, assault, and robbery. He was charged with attempted murder.

Police expressed outrage. Birmingham police Sergeant Heath Boackle, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, told Al.com: “He was laying there lifeless and people were standing around taking pictures. If the tables were turned, and that was a suspect lying there, they would be rioting.”
