Gov. Kay Ivey announced this morning that she has promoted Press Secretary Gina Maiola to communications director, replacing Leah Garner, who is moving to the private sector.
Maiola has served as press secretary and the governor’s main spokesperson since June 2019.
“Gina has been a major asset to the administration since my very first day as governor,” Ivey said in a press release. “Gina is well respected, has strong relationships with media outlets across the state, and I am confident she will continue to do extremely good work in her new role.”
Maiola accepted an entry-level position with the governor’s office after graduating from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in communication and information sciences and University Honors in 2016. Maiola later became deputy press secretary and the governor’s main speech writer.
Garner joined the Ivey administration in June 2019 as communications director after six years with the Business Council of Alabama, where she was director of governmental affairs and advocacy.
Garner is going to work for The Foundation for Excellence in Education, or ExcelinEd, to be the senior director of communications.
