Birmingham police officer hospitalized after crashing into utility pole, fence

A Birmingham police officer was injured in a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning.

Just before 2 a.m., a community member called 911 to report the officer was in a wreck in the 100 block of 19th Street South.

South Precinct officers arrived on the scene and found a patrol vehicle had crashed into a utility pole and barrier fence at the scene of the Old Alabama Power building, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the officer to UAB Hospital. The extent of his injuries wasn’t disclosed but Fitzgerald said he is stable and responding to communication.

The preliminary investigation showed the officer was on patrol traveling northbound on 19th Street South before colliding into a utility pole. “At this time, we do not believe the officer had his lights or sirens activated nor was he responding to a call for service,’’ Fitzgerald said.

No other vehicles were involved, and no one else was injured.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation by the Birmingham Police Accident Reconstruction Unit.
