Del Taco: Mexican-food chain plans to open 6 new Alabama locations

Looks like the Pepsi to Taco Bell’s Coca-Cola is coming to Huntsville.

Del Taco plans to add six new North Alabama locations, according to a press release. Currently, Phenix City is the California-founded Mexican food chain’s only location in the state. Sam Abusaleem, who’s previous ownership experience includes Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, is the franchisee for the planned Huntsville-area Del Tacos.

“My goal,” Abusaleem says in a statement, “has been to bring a fresh, high quality, casual concept to the residents of Northern Alabama and Del Taco is just that. I’ve been in the retail and restaurant industry for more than 30 years and am looking forward to growing my portfolio with such a well-respected brand that believes in the same dedication to its guests and employees as I do.”

The Del Taco press release doesn’t specify exactly where in the Huntsville market their six new restaurants will be located. Or a timetable for construction and openings. AL.com has reached out to a Del Taco publicist for more info.

Del Taco is the second largest Mexican fast-food – or “quick service,” if you must – brand in the U.S. The first Del Taco opened in 1964, in Yermo – about a two-hour drive from Los Angeles – with a menu that featured 19-cent tacos and 24-cent hamburgers. There are now around 600 Del Taco locations in 16 states.

Del Taco’s current menu includes crispy chicken tacos, “crunchtadas,” “epic burritos,” fresh house-made guacamole, carne asada fries, Double Del Cheeseburger, among other items. There is also breakfast. Options thereof include a “hashbrown, egg and cheese stuffed quesadilla breakfast taco,” breakfast burritos and hashbrown sticks. More info at deltaco.com/menu.
