East Alabama man poured gasoline on woman, ignited her, police say

An east Alabama man is behind bars, accused of setting a woman on fire.

Anniston police at 8 a.m. on Sunday responded to the 800 block of W. 16th Street on a report of a person on fire. When they arrived, they found a woman walking down the street who had sustained severe burns.

Leslie C. Hogeland, 36, of Gadsden, was taken to Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, and then transferred to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, police said. Her condition wasn’t immediately available but family members said she was burned from the waist up including her face and is now awake and conscious.

An investigation led to the arrest of 54-year-old Henry L. Wesley on an attempted murder charge. The warrant states Wesley poured gasoline on Hogeland and then ignited her. The relationship between the suspect and the victim has not yet been released.

Wesley is being held in the Calhoun County Jail on $100,000 bond. He has a court date set for Jan. 10, 2022.
