The Gadsden-Etowah County community said goodbye Tuesday to Sandra “Sandy” Self, who distinguished herself with two businesses in downtown Gadsden over the years, and as an active member of the community.
Self died Dec. 15, just weeks after celebrating her 71st birthday. Her funeral service was Tuesday.
Sandy and her husband, Mike Self, owned and operated The Choice Restaurant — establishing an eatery that is a staple continues to be a fixture in downtown Gadsden under new ownership — for 25 years as they raised their three children.
After Self retired from a career as a financial advisor, she followed her hobby of antiquing into another downtown business — Gadsden Variety Antique Mall.
After reimagining the longtime “dime store” concept as an antique mall with a lunch counter and floral business, Self sold the business to Blake and Heather New, and she helped guide its new owners in taking over.
“Sandy had a personality that would light up the room,” Blake New said. “She held our hand and helped us transition Gadsden Variety because she loved the store, she loved the customers and she loved Gadsden.
“Heather and I fell in love with Sand and she loved us back,” he said. “We even started calling her ‘Mom,’ and not just because she told us what to do.
“Our hearts are broken and we will miss her more than words can explain,” New said.
Downtown Gadsden Inc. Director Kay Moore said Self was a vital part of downtown. She had ideas for promoting and strengthening the business district, Moore said.
“And if she didn’t like something, she would let you know,” Moore said — providing valued constructive criticism.
“She really did love downtown Gadsden,” Moore said. “She will be greatly missed.”
In addition to her entrepreneurship, Self was a member of the Gadsden Restaurant Association, Gadsden Woman’s Club, Altrusa Club and the Antiquarian Society, and she was instrumental in starting the Northeast Alabama Ballroom Dance Society in 1992.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to Gadsden First United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
