Macy’s at Brookwood Village – one of only two Macy’s stores in the state – is set to close.
USA Today reported the Brookwood Village location in Mountain Brook is among those Macy’s plans to close in the coming months. Exact closing dates were unavailable.
“Stores remain an integral part of our omnichannel retail ecosystem,” Macy’s said in a statement to USA Today. “As our business evolves, we continue to optimize and reposition our store fleet to more effectively support our omnichannel sales growth and expand market share.”
Macy’s had previously announced it would close as many as 10 stores in January 2022. It was reconsidering, however, the fate of some 60 additional stores that were among the 125 set to close by 2023. Macy’s announced the wide-scale closers – along with plans to cut some 2,000 corporate jobs – in February 2020.
At the time, Macy’s said it was closing its “least-productive stores” in “lower-tier malls” while shifting to the “best malls” and “new off-store formats.”
The Brookwood closure would leave only one Macy’s in Alabama, located at the Riverchase Galleria.
