A man and woman found dead in an east Birmingham home Thursday morning have now been identified.
Xavier Alexander, 26, and Danija D. Mitchell, 23, were found dead inside a house in the 5000 block of 42nd Place North.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said the circumstances surrounding the deaths are still being investigated by Birmingham police. The office said the two each died of “an apparent injury.”
Alexander and Mitchell’s bodies were found shortly after 9:30 a.m. when East Precinct Officers were called to a house on a report of an open door. Neighbors had told dispatchers the door had been opened all night and a child was crying.
They were met by a toddler boy and began searching other areas of the house. They went into a bedroom where they located two adults unresponsive on the floor.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced both dead on the scene. Authorities have not said how the two people died but neighbors reported hearing gunshots overnight.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said evidence indicated a homicide had taken place. They have not ruled out the possibility of a murder-suicide.
Fitzgerald said Mitchell is believed to be the victim of a homicide. Alexander’s death remains unclassified. A gun was recovered inside the home.
