That Kiss Between Winona Ryder and David Harbour On Stranger Things Was Improvised

On Friday, the hotly anticipated Stranger Things finale episodes were released on Netflix and it definitely caused a storm on the internet. At a certain point, the Daily Mail reports that the entire site was returning an error message to users trying to watch the feature length ending to season 4.

For a long time, fans have been noticing the simmering chemistry between actors Winona Ryder and David Harbour, who play concerned mom Joyce Byers and police officer Jim Hopper. The writers noticed, too, and wrote in a passionate kiss for the budding lovers in Russia in between escaping a labor camp and battling Demogorgons. And then, the performers decided to take things into their own hands and add one more tender kiss for good measure, improvising another smooch for the camera.

The official account for the writer’s room verified that the moment was spontaneous. They wrote, “This kiss wasn’t scripted, Winona and David added it on the day of filming.”

This season has set the record as the No. 1 English-language series on Netflix and the show has had 930.3 million hours of streaming viewership within the first 28 days on Netflix. The previous record for hours was held by Bridgerton.

In a behind-the-scenes interview on Beyond Stranger Things, Harbour explained that he is well aware of all the “shipping” fans have been doing for his and Ryder’s characters.

“The fans, they call it, like, Jopper or something,” he said. “They all ship this relationship with Hopper and Joyce, and I do too because I feel like they’re two really lonely, lost people that really need each other.”

In February of this year, creators Matt and Ross Duffer told viewers in an open letter that season 5 would be the final one for the show, and they have it all planned out. It remains to be seen if a happy ending is ahead for these two lovebirds.
