More than 3,000 runners and walkers got outside and got moving in support of the American Heart Association (AHA) Birmingham Heart Walk on June 11. The event was held in person at Railroad Park for the first time since 2019.
The 2022 campaign has raised more than $450,000, with participants from 156 teams and 40 companies supporting the lifesaving research and programs offered by the AHA. Participants gathered in teams made up of family, friends and co-workers to enjoy a group warmup, kids’ activities, fellowship and fun before the walk began.
“We were so excited to return to our first in-person Heart Walk since before the start of the pandemic as we rallied together to raise funds and awareness of heart disease and stroke,” said Lizzi Willicott, executive director for the AHA in Birmingham. “It was wonderful to see so many participate, and we are grateful for everyone’s support as we work to create a healthier Birmingham.”
Walkers and runners chose from two routes – a 1-mile survivors’ route or a 5K option – in downtown Birmingham.
“I was so pleased with the level of support from the community,” said Southern Company Technology Business Partner Bonnie Parker, who led Alabama Power and Southern Company’s efforts this year. “You could tell everyone was really excited to be at the event in person again and to support the AHA in their mission to fight for a world of longer, healthier lives.”
“The Heart Walk does not happen without the dedication of companies, community leaders, volunteers and sponsors who work year-round to make the Heart Walk possible.” said Dr. James Davies, director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB and chairman of the event this year. “I am so grateful for the support of our Executive Leadership Team, as well as the entire Birmingham community.”
Funds raised from the Birmingham Heart Walk go toward supporting lifesaving research and programs. During the past fiscal year, the AHA funded 26 research grants at UAB totaling $6.8 million.
