TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA — A man in Tuscaloosa, Alabama died after police officers used pepper spray to subdue him while he was resisting arrest last Friday night.
Police received an anonymous tip at around 9 p.m. on Friday that Anthony Ware, 35, was at Tuscaloosa’s Crescent East Apartments sitting on a porch and holding a gun. WBRC reports that Ware had an outstanding warrant for eluding the police.
When police arrived at the apartment, Ware reportedly fled into the nearby woods and Reuters reports that six police officers gave chase.
While in the woods, Ware apparently resisted arrest and police officers used pepper spray on Ware before he was handcuffed. Ware then experienced severe trouble breathing and collapsed as he was walking out of the woods.
Police immediately performed CPR following Ware’s collapse and he was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
The six police officers involved included at least three white officers, a Black officer and an Asian officer. Police plan to release the video of the arrest, which was taken from body cameras and vehicle dash cams.
