A 16-year-old died Tuesday at Selma High School and others were sent to the hospital.
According to a Selma City Schools official, a male sophomore passed away at the school. Three other students went to the emergency room.
The school system is unsure about whether the incidents are all related and said they are waiting for toxicology reports to determine the cause of death. The student’s body will be taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine the cause and manner of death.
Officials from multiple state agencies will be continuing the investigation including the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
“As a community, we are deeply saddened by the death of this young scholar,” said Selma City Schools Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd in a press release. “We ask for prayers for the young man’s family, the faculty, staff, and students of Selma High School as we all continue to grieve. This is such a shock for our Saints Nation family.”
The Alabama Department of Education sent grief counselors Wednesday to assist the school in face of their loss. The school system said that the local government is working to provide the community with additional resources as well as working with police and medical professionals.
