Alabama Power Foundation releases 2021 Annual Report


The Alabama Power Foundation on Thursday released its 2021 Annual Report, spotlighting the foundation’s efforts and the vital work being done by nonprofits across Alabama during these challenging times.

“At the foundation, we are committed to working every day to help improve the quality of life for Alabama families,” said Zeke Smith, Alabama Power executive vice president and president of the foundation’s board of directors. “We recognize this mission is not one that we can carry out alone – it absolutely requires collaboration and teamwork.”

Titled “A State of Change,” the report’s theme has a dual meaning. It acknowledges how the state of Alabama is always evolving, and underscores how the foundation partners with local nonprofits and community organizations to support positive change for Alabamians.

In addition to providing an update on foundation activities, the report highlights the work of four nonprofits in Alabama supported by the foundation. Those organizations are:

  • 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile, and its ongoing work to provide scholarships and opportunities for underrepresented students at the University of South Alabama.
  • Urban Impact Inc. in Birmingham, which works with partners to help preserve and enhance the city’s historic Fourth Avenue Business District and Civil Rights District, including supporting minority-owned small businesses and minority entrepreneurs who are helping to revitalize the area.
  • HEARTS of Cleburne County, which provides a wealth of services that support families, children and the elderly in need in the east Alabama community.
  • Tuscaloosa’s One Place, which collaborates with public and private sector partners to support children and families by providing home- and school-based services in multiple west Alabama counties.

“As our state emerges from the pandemic, the social and economic challenges are great,” Smith added. He said the foundation will continue to adapt and work with nonprofit partners to meet the evolving needs of the state.

This year’s report was released at the conclusion of the foundation’s annual Elevate Conference, which draws nonprofit leaders from across the state for training sessions and to encourage collaboration. For the third year in a row, the conference was held virtually, for the safety of the participants.

Also, now open to nonprofits is the foundation’s annual Elevate grants. The Elevate grant program is designed to empower nonprofits and help them tackle pressing needs that are not specifically addressed through the foundation’s other grant programs.

This year, the Elevate grant program will award 10 nonprofits across the state up to $8,000, with a focus on educational advancement, civic and community development, arts and cultural enrichment, health and human services, and environmental stewardship.
