- The Alabama Republican Party will re-hear arguments from Senate District 27 candidate Jay Hovey on why he should be the party’s nominee on the November ballot, it said late Wednesday.
- Hovey on Wednesday asked the ALGOP Candidate Committee to reconsider its June 25 decision to declare the race a tie after counting a previously invalidated provisional ballot.
- Without that ballot, Hovey won the May 24 primary against three-term incumbent Sen. Tom Whatley by one vote.
- “Election security and making sure that every vote is counted properly is of paramount importance to the Alabama Republican Party,” it said in a statement late Wednesday. “The ALGOP will release additional information once the committee has reached a decision.”

- Law enforcement agencies were conducting a manhunt Wednesday evening after two deputies were shot and wounded, one of them critically, while chasing a suspect in Alabama, authorities said.
- District Attorney Michael Jackson said the shooting happened in Bibb County as two deputies were chasing a suspect in a stolen vehicle. The man fired at the deputies, shooting both, he said. One of the deputies was critically wounded.
- Jackson said the suspect has been identified as Austin Hall, 26. Hall should be considered armed and dangerous, he added. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency issued a Blue Alert, asking people to notify authorities if they see Hall.
- Jackson said multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the hunt for the suspect. Local television news outlets showed a heavy police presence in the county, located in central Alabama.

- For the first time since 2002, the Libertarian Party will have candidates on the November general election ballot.
- Party Chairman Gavin Goodman, who is also running for Alabama’s U.S. House District 7, said more than 60 candidates, from Congress to county commissioner, are expected on the Nov. 8 ballot. Candidates will not be certified until Aug. 26, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office.
- Per state law, to get on the ballot, the party needed to gather more than 50,000 signatures statewide. It ended up with more than 70,000.
- To get there, the party recruited candidates.
- “We started with 14, and knew it wasn’t enough,” Goodman said.
- Defeating well-known Republican incumbents will be a challenge, Goodman acknowledges.

- The Alabama Association of REALTORS® is seeking to increase diversity in the industry by partnering with Alabama State University to offer students a “microcredential” in real estate.
- No college education is required to get a salesperson or broker license in Alabama, but the Alabama Real Estate Commission does state on its website that an exam must be passed to obtain each license, and training courses are required both before and after receiving a real estate license.
- The association said Wednesday that this is the first time a state REALTOR® organization and a Historically Black College/University have come together to build a program like this.
- “The goal of the program is to equip students with a deep understanding of the real estate industry as a whole, empower students with the knowledge to pursue careers in real estate-related fields, and instill the importance of homeownership,” said Alabama REALTORS® Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Walker. “Together, we can work to increase diversity in real estate-related fields, promote minority homeownership, and help close the wealth gap in Alabama.”

- The mother of a U.S. military veteran who went missing after he traveled to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia has spoken with her son by telephone, the family said Wednesday.
- Lois “Bunny” Drueke, of Tuscaloosa, answered a call from what appeared to be a Russian exchange and talked to son Alex Drueke on Tuesday for nearly 10 minutes in their first conversation since he and Andy Huynh, another Alabama veteran who traveled to Ukraine, were captured after a fight earlier this month in Ukraine.
- Apparently at the prompting of his captors, Drueke said the people holding him were anxious to begin negotiations and that he had food, water and bedding, Bunny Drueke said in a statement released by her family.
- “He sounded tired and stressed, and he was clearly reciting some things he had been made to practice or read, but it was wonderful to hear his voice and know he’s alive and alright,” she said.
- Drueke said he hadn’t been in contact with Huynh for several days. The United States has said both men should be protected as prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions.
