Escaped Alabama inmate recaptured after spotted on resident’s home security camera

A state prison inmate is back in custody after he escaped custody on Tuesday.

A Montgomery County resident saw Charles Calvin Harris, 32, on her home security cameras near Foxhall Road and Vaughn Road in Pike Road and called 911. Sheriff’s deputies responded and quickly took Harris back into custody. He was recaptured at 3 p.m.

“We always appreciate the public for calling us and letting us know about suspicious activity,’’ said sheriff’s Capt. Leigh Persky.

Harris escaped from Kilby Correctional Facility on Wares Ferry Road in Montgomery about 11:30 a.m. Authorities have not said how he made his getaway.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency special agents and troopers, as well as ALEA’s Aviation Unit, are conducting the search.

Harris is serving a 15-year sentence for a 2018 theft of property conviction out of Covington County.

Harris is a white male, 5-feet, 10-inches tall weighing about 208 pounds. He was wearing an Alabama Department of Corrections khaki top and khaki pants.
