Among the bite-sized crab cakes and elegantly iced lobster tails at The Odeon French-American bistro on June 9, a cohort of celebrities including Lucy Boynton, Cazzie David, Amandla Stenberg, Piper Perabo, and Zosia Mamet toddled in on Chanel mules as they greeted one another with kisses on each cheek. There to kick off the Tribeca Film Festival, they’d been selected as honorary guests to herald Chanel’s partnership with Through Her Lens, a program providing mentorships and masterclasses to women and non-binary writers and filmmakers.

A few nights later, on June 13, the fashion house hosted another Tribeca occasion, this time honoring artists Nicoletta Darita de la Brown, February James, Garry Simmons, Leilah Babirye, and more with a dinner at French brasserie Balthazar in Soho. The glitzy events were a worthy spectacle on behalf of underrepresented Hollywood talent—and an excellent opportunity to trot out some Chanel tweed.

“With [Through Her Lens] in particular, I love it,” filmmaker Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, whose 2003 win at Tribeca for Best Documentary launched her career, told ELLE.com. “Any good excuse to have all these amazing, smart, talented women wearing Chanel. It’s kind of like a fairy godmother moment.” Wearing a black Chanel tweed jacket styled with a graphic t-shirt and jeans, she added, “Especially coming from the non-fiction side where you’re always the kind of poor cousin, Chanel has brought a whole different level to documentary filmmaking.”

At The Odeon, Boynton posed with Stenberg and Vasarhelyi, among others. (She also wore Chanel tweed, in a trendy shade of Barbie pink.) Her first experience with the Tribeca Film Festival was through Chanel’s Through Her Lens program, she says, for which she formerly served on the jury. “It was such a beautiful experience because it was such an insight into how eclectic all of our tastes are,” she told ELLE.com, “and therefore how much space there is and how much we’re yearning for an eclectic range of stories to reflect that.”

Then, at Balthazar on June 13, on behalf of Tribeca’s 2022 Artist Awards Program, Chanel welcomed stars like Penélope Cruz, Sadie Sink, Robert De Niro, Andrew Garfield, Evan Mock, and Boynton, who shared conversation and profiteroles amongst the—yes—tweed, but also satin blouses, ruffled collars, and cropped sweaters. Cruz matched the hue of Boynton’s earlier look in a floor-length Barbie-pink gown with buttoned straps and a matching quilted handbag.

After a long COVID quarantine, it would seem the fairy godmothers have all returned to Tribeca. As Jane Rosenthal, a film producer and co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, told the crowd at The Odeon, “Normal has never felt so extraordinary.”
