The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas will celebrate its 52nd Annual PowWow today and Saturday. The tribe invites area residents to join Tribal citizens for food, music and dancing, as well as an opportunity to learn more about Native American culture.
A PowWow is a social gathering of tribal nations, and the Alabama-Coushatta PowWow began in 1966. The PowWow also serves as a homecoming for tribal members who live away from the reservation.
Spectators will enjoy Native American dancing, cuisine and arts and crafts. Tribal dancers and singers coming from throughout the United States and Canada will compete for prize money.
“We look forward to welcoming our friends and neighbors to our Reservation for this year’s PowWow,” said Ricky Sylestine, Chairman of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas Tribal Council. “This is a great opportunity to witness beautiful tribal dances and music and to learn about our culture and traditions. Our Tribe loves to come together with our community for this event.”
The Alabama-Coushatta Reservation is located between Livingston and Woodville. The PowWow will be held at the Tribe’s Reservation Ballpark and admission is $7 per day, but free for guests age 6 and younger. Seating is limited, so those who attend are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Gates will open at 2 p.m. today and at noon on June 4. Alcohol will not be allowed at the event.
The Better Business Bureau of Southeast Texas has named its 2022 Students of Integrity. Six regional students will receive $2,500 scholarship awarded by their BBB Consumer Education Foundation. Since its start in 2019, the program has awarded 14 students with a total of $35,000 in scholarships.
Prior to the Student of Integrity program, BBB Southeast Texas set up an endowment with Lamar University in 1998 that continues to provide scholarships to College of Business students. The honorees receive a one-time, $2,500 scholarship made payable to the college, trade school or university of their choice upon enrollment.
Each year a team of independent judges carefully selects the finalists from close to 100 applications from across the eight counties in the regional service area. This year’s students, along with other businesses and organizations, will be recognized next Thursday at the 2022 BBB Torch Awards at the Beaumont Civic Center.
The 2022 BBB Southeast Texas Student of Integrity recipients are Emma Grace Alvey, Hardin Jefferson HS; Colin Angel, Monsignor Kelly Catholic HS; Keira Hemmert, Hardin Jefferson HS; Claire Larson, Hardin Jefferson HS; Ian Rothenberger, Nederland HS; Averie Varnado, Port Neches Groves HS.
BBB’s Education Foundation will host the annual Torch Award for Ethics next Thursday at the Beaumont Civic Center at 6 p.m. The night will feature dinner, entertainment and a silent and live auction. The events proceeds go towards the BBB’s scholarship program. The 2022 event is sponsored in part by Universal Coin & Bullion, Function 4/Star Graphics, and Howell Furniture. Individual tickets are $85 with table sponsorships at $750.
Gov. Greg Abbott announced that Texas now leads the nation as home to the most Fortune 500 companies, overtaking states like New York and California in the 2022 Fortune 500 List. With 53 Fortune 500 corporate headquarters calling Texas home, the state’s business-friendly climate and skilled workforce surpassed New York’s 51 corporate headquarters and California’s 50. Additionally, Houston and Dallas are in the top five municipalities in the nation for Fortune 500 companies, with 21 and 11 respectively.
“Texas is the economic engine of the nation, and I am proud to announce that we continue leading the country now with the most Fortune 500 corporate headquarters,” Abbott said. “Thanks to our unmatched business environment, with no corporate or personal income taxes, a highly skilled and diverse workforce, easy access to global markets, and reasonable regulatory climate, Texas has more businesses relocating and expanding here in our state than ever before.”
The 68th Fortune 500 annual list of the nation’s largest corporations is based on revenue from the 2021 fiscal year. Fortune 500 companies represent two-thirds of the nation’s GDP with revenues of $16.1 trillion and employ 29.7 million people worldwide.
