A $24.4 million project at Decatur’s Polyplex Americas plant and a $21.7 million project for a Shamrock Investment distribution center in Huntsville are the most expensive projects during a busy week for construction in the area.

Overall, permits were issued for 11 commercial projects exceeding $1 million between June 14 and 21. The projects totaled almost $137 million, according to Southern Exposure reports.

The Polyplex Americas project is part of a more than $90 million expansion announced last year at its facility at 3001 Mallard Fox Drive, which is in Decatur’s industrial park on the Tennessee River. It follows the start of construction on a $16 million expansion of the nearby 3M plant which began last month.

According to a story by the Alabama Department of Commerce, the expansion will create 100 jobs.

Polyplex is adding a second biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) film line at the Decatur plant, with an additional investment to create matching capacity for captive resin. BOPET is used in packaging, electrical and other industrial applications, according to a company statement. Once the expansion is complete, the facility will have the largest-capacity BOPET film line in the world, according to Alabama’s Department of Commerce story.

Fite Construction of Decatur is the contractor for the project.

The City of Huntsville issued a permit to Shamrock Investments for a $21.7 million project at 10121 Greenbrier Parkway, across from the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing Plant.

The builder of the project is Jim Cooper Construction. The project is part of construction of a distribution center, which is expected to be more than 427,000 square feet.

Shamrock Investments, LLC has warehouse/light industrial, office and multifamily properties across the Southeast region, including properties at Jetplex Industrial Park in Huntsville.
