Police search Tutwiler dorm at University of Alabama after threat surfaces on social media

Students at the University of Alabama had a scare Monday morning after a gun threat surfaced on social media.

Tutwiler Hall, a female dorm, was on lockdown late Sunday night while police looked into the threat.

Residents were not allowed to enter or exit the building for about 45 minutes.

In a statement on the university’s website, officials said the information provided to the university police and other law enforcement agencies about the situation at Tutwiler Hall was “based on rumors and social media posts and not actual witness accounts.”

Authorities lifted the lockdown and let students back in their rooms early this morning.

Police didn’t find a weapon or anyone who appeared to be out of place at the dorm.

Activities are expected to resume Monday as scheduled.
