Vestavia Hills police chase ends with crash in Tarrant; Officer, 2 suspects taken to hospital


A Vestavia Hills police chase ended in Tarrant when the suspects crashed into a Tarrant police officer who was on patrol.

The chase began on U.S. 31 in Vestavia Hills and traveled through Homewood and Birmingham, before ending in Tarrant.

Tarrant Chief Wendell Major said the suspects wrecked just before 930 p.m. at 1601 Pinson Street when the suspect hit the police cruiser broadside, causing it to overturn. Authorities said the injured Tarrant officer was not involved in the pursuit.

The Tarrant officer had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was taken to UAB Hospital with five police cars escorting him. The extent of his injuries wasn’t immediately known, but authorities said he is expected to be OK.

The male suspect was being taken by police to the hospital to be checked out, and then taken into custody. The female passenger in the suspect vehicle was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Birmingham police are assisting in the crash investigation.
