Alabama Media Group wins SPJ reporting awards

Alabama Media Group public safety reporter Carol Robinson and political columnist Kyle Whitmire were announced Saturday as recipients of 2020 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism. Robinson was recognized in the Newspaper Deadline Reporting category for a non-daily publication. Her recognition was for stories she wrote last year about the July 2020 shooting death of 8-year-old Royta Giles at Riverchase Galleria in Hoover. Whitmire was recognized for Newspaper General Column Writing for a non-daily publication with a circulation under 100,000. The columns that were included in the award-winning package include pieces about the late Ruth Bader Ginsberg, state Rep. Will Dismukes, among other entries. Whitmire, on Thursday, won the first-ever MOLLY Prize for political commentary.“Congratulations to all of the winners,” Alabama Media Group editor and Vice President of Content Kelly Ann Scott said. “We are honored to be honored and grateful to be included among such great work.”Judges chose the winners from entries in categories covering print, radio, television and online. The awards recognize outstanding work published or broadcast in 2020. Dating back to 1932, the awards originally honored six individuals for contributions to journalism. The current program began in 1939, when the Society of Professional Journalists granted the first Distinguished Service Awards. The honors later became the Sigma Delta Chi Awards. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. The announcement occurred one day after the Alabama Media Group and three other media outlets were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting, and columnist Roy S. Johnson was named a finalist for commentary. The national reporting honor was shared with the staffs of The Marshall Project, The Indianapolis Star and the Invisible Institute, for a yearlong investigation of K-9 units and the damage that police dogs inflict on Americans.
