Body found in burned vehicle in historic Pratt City cemetery investigated as homicide


An investigation is underway after a body was found inside a burned vehicle at a west Birmingham historic cemetery.

The discovery was made early Friday afternoon at Fraternal Cemetery on Sheridan Road in Pratt City.

The skeletal remains were recovered from the burned sedan about 1:15 p.m., according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The victim has not yet been identified.

Birmingham police Lt. Rod Mauldin said West Precinct officers responded to the scene at noon after being alerted to the burned vehicle. Officers arrived and observed skeletal human remains in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

He said the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the cause has not yet been determined.
