A male was found shot to death early Saturday near an abandoned apartment complex on Birmingham’s west side.
Officers were dispatched at 1 a.m. to 10th Place and 22nd Avenue West on a call of person shot. That area is near the vacant East Thomas Apartments off Arkadelphia Road.
Police arrived and found the male victim in the middle of the road suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, said Lt. Rod Mauldin. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the man dead on the scene.
The victim’s name has not yet been released pending notification of his family.
Mauldin said details of what lead to the deadly shooting are limited. No arrests have been made.
The fatal shooting is one of three deaths in less than 24 hours under investigation by Birmingham police.
On Friday afternoon, remains were found inside a burned vehicle off Sheridan Road in Pratt City. Mauldin said that death was unclassified, and no additional information has been released.
Kiara Holcombe, 32, was shot to death Friday, July 8, 2022, when she was leaving her Birmingham home in the Titusville community.
Then, just after 6 p.m. Friday, a woman was found shot to death inside a vehicle that had struck a fence and then come to rest at the corner of Center Street and Fourth Avenue South in the Titusville community.
Police late Friday identified that victim as Kiara Holcombe. She was 32 and lived in Birmingham.
Mauldin said investigators believe Holcombe was leaving her residence when a masked gunman approached her vehicle and opened fire. Holcombe was pronounced dead on the scene.
This morning’s victim marks the city’s 70th confirmed homicide this year. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 94 homicides, including the 70 in Birmingham.
