Recount affirms Fred ‘Coach’ Plump’s win in Jefferson County district of Alabama House

Jefferson County election officials and Democratic Party officials held a recount this morning in the runoff in District 55 in the Alabama House of Representatives but it did not change the outcome.

Fred “Coach” Plump received 952 votes to win the seat over the incumbent, Rep. Rod Scott, D-Fairfield, who received 919 votes.

In the recount, each candidate gained four votes from the total certified after the June 21 runoff, when Plump had 948 votes and Scott had 915.

Scott requested the recount with the Jefferson County Democratic Party. It was held in the Election Central Room in the Criminal Justice Center in Birmingham.

Plump and Scott made the runoff by leading a five-candidate field in the May 24 primary.

Plump, as the Democratic nominee, wins the seat because there is no Republican or Libertarian candidate in District 55, which is in central Jefferson County. His term begins in November.

“I’ve been serving the community for my entire career – first in the military, then as a firefighter, a librarian and 50 years as a youth baseball coach. Now I look forward to further serving as a state legislator,” Plump said in a press release. His campaign planned to hold a victory party tonight in Fairfield.

Scott has represented District 55 since 2006.
