Sylacauga police investigating fatal shooting, the city’s first homicide of 2022


Sylacauga police are investigating the city’s first homicide of the year.Police Chief Kelley Johnson said that police were called to the Coosa Valley Medical Center at around 11 p.m. Friday about a person who had been shot.Officers spoke with hospital staff and learned that 22-year-old Nartavius Cortez Fluker-Smith had been shot multiple times and arrived at the emergency department hospital in a private vehicle.Witnesses told investigators that Fluker-Smith was sitting in a 2011 Ford Fusion near his home in the 300 block of South Main Avenue when the shooter(s) approached him and began firing into the car at him.An hour later, police were notified by the hospital that Fluker-Smith had died.His body was taken to the Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy.
