One person hurt after shooting at east Columbia apartment complex

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Police Officers are working to learn more following a shooting in East Columbia on Saturday.

The department says they identified one potential suspect and brought them in for questioning around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officers say they responded to the 200 block of Old Highway 63 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday for shots fired. Officers were still at the scene as of midnight.

Police blocked off parts of Walnut Street and the entrance to the Lakewood Apartments with crime scene tape and patrol cruisers.

At the scene, ABC 17 News saw first responders, several CPD patrol cruisers, officers, and the crime scene investigation van.

Several people at the apartment complex told ABC 17 news they heard a woman scream shortly before police officers arrived. One resident also told news crews this type of police activity is unusual for the area.

CPD says one male was shot and suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Officers say the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Lieutenant Scott Alpers with Columbia Police said the department can use the community help.

“They can call crime stoppers where they can remain anonymous. They can also call 311 to ask to speak with an officer about the incident,” Alpers said.

Columbia police says there is no threat to the community. We will bring any updates as we learn more.
