Halloween hasn’t ghosted us just yet! The spookiest time of the year is on the horizon and RetailMeNot has dug up some sweet facts.
We surveyed 1,072 U.S. adults on their favorite Halloween candies, and the results are freaky fun! We found that 59% of consumers plan to celebrate Halloween this year, and shoppers plan to spend an average of $108.62 on Halloween decor, candy and costumes this year to celebrate the holiday, compared to $36.18 in 2021. Meaning shoppers are spending 200% more this year to celebrate the spooky season!

American’s Halloween Candy Preferences by the Numbers
Not surprisingly, our survey found that Halloween is still all about chocolate!
The popular treat remains the favored option for Americans during this upcoming Halloween, but it’s a tight race to determine the one candy winner: 22% of those we surveyed said they are looking forward to eating Reese’s chocolate candies on Oct. 31, and 15% said they prefer Kit Kats. Which would you choose?
Consistently, Americans are also excited to treat themselves to other popular chocolate candies, such as Snickers (14% believe “you’re not you when you’re hungry”), Hershey bars (12% give a thumbs up) and M&M’s (10% will “try both”) just as much as last year.

In 2021, Reese’s and M&Ms were the reigning champions, but this year, Kit Kat took over for the second most popular Halloween candy. It seems shoppers still prefer chocolate candies for the most popular Halloween sweets.
We also found that non-chocolate-based candies fell short in anticipation compared to chocolate candies again this year. Skittles were preferred by 5% of the Americans we surveyed, and candy corn–always a bit of a controversial topic–was favored by just 8% of those who participated in the survey.
