Aniah Haley Blanchard went missing on October 23, 2019. The 19-year-old’s body was found a month after her disappearance. A suspect, identified as Ibraheem Yazeed, was arrested and charged with Blanchard’s murder. Yazeed was out on bond for alleged kidnapping and attempted murder at the time Aniah vanished. “When I found out about the suspect and his criminal history, I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock,” says Aniah’s mother, Angela Harris. “I knew at that moment I was going to do something.” The circumstances surrounding Aniah Blanchard’s death led to the creation of “Aniah’s Law,” which reforms Alabama’s bail system, allowing judges to deny bond to those who are charged with committing violent crimes. For the law to go into effect, Alabama voters will need to vote yes on Amendment One on November’s ballot.
