What is Cash Back Day?

Cash Back Day is an annual shopping event that was created by RetailMeNot in 2019 to kick off the holiday season with some of the biggest cash back offers of the year. By shopping through participating stores and activating cash back offers, shoppers can get paid to shop! For example, say your favorite store is offering 5% cash back. If you activate a RetailMeNot cash back offer and spend $100 at that retailer, you’ll get $5 back within 45 days of your purchase.

Shoppers earned an average of $18 cash back per order during the 2021 event.
RetailMeNot paid out nearly $300,000 to the shoppers who took part in Cash Back Day 2021.

Cash Back Day’s early-November timing is by design! According to our Ziff Media Group holiday survey (see methodology), we know that 56% of American shoppers plan to start scoping out early holiday deals, beginning in October. And 62% of shoppers say they plan to get an early start this year, due to the supply chain woes they saw last season.

Cash Back Day 2022 will feature more than 1,100 retailers and offers from brands like Best Buy, Samsung, Macy’s, Tarte Cosmetics, Lowe’s, Groupon and StubHub.

According to our survey, 70% of shoppers are taking inflation into consideration as they plan holiday shopping, and the average holiday shopping budget this year is $725 (down from $786 last year). Holiday shoppers are being price- and deal-conscious this year, with 76% of those we surveyed saying a good deal encourages them to buy a product or service.
While most (66%) of shoppers prefer to give gifts over receiving them, more than half (57%) say they plan to treat themselves during the holiday season. So that cash back might come in handy when shoppers are ready to buy themselves everything they didn’t get for the holidays this year.
