A 60-something-year-old Alabama man was reportedly trying to take the weapon apart, for reasons unknown at this time.
Somehow the grenade went off, and when the smoke cleared, the device became lodged in the man’s thigh.
The real problems came when the ambulance company tried to transport him to the hospital. Because it was a live explosive, all the hospitals turned him away, so an ordinance expert was called in from a nearby army base and the operation took place inside the ambulance itself.
The whole ordeal took eight hours to arrange, but the actual procedure to remove the device lasted only 45 minutes. After the explosive was removed, the man was brought to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital and allowed to recover.
