Margot Robbie Wears Black Chanel Cutout Dress at the 2023 Met Gala

C’mon Barbie, let’s go party at the Met Gala. Margot Robbie, who kicked off her Barbie press tour last week in a pink Prada set at CinemaCon, of course made the trip from Las Vegas to New York to attend tonight’s Met Gala. Robbie arrived, taking a break from Barbiecore dressing to honor Karl Lagerfeld’s design legacy for the night’s “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme.

Robbie wore a black gown with a cutout, a vintage Lagerfeld design, she told Vogue during her red carpet interview. This is dress was worn by Cindy Crawford in 1993. They remade it for me, and it’s a Karl design,” she said. She added that being at the Met Gala, “it’s incredible. Obviously the Met’s always na exciting night, but I had the great privilege of getting to know Karl to a certain extent.” She said that she was the last ambassador Lagerfeld picked, a true “honor.”

Robbie has kept most details of the Barbie movie secret ahead of its July release, though she did tease that she’s surprised it even got made.

“The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day,” Robbie told BAFTA in March, via IndieWire, “‘because they are never going to let us make this movie.’ But they did.”

Robbie has been a longtime ambassador of Chanel, the fashion house that the late Lagerfeld helmed from 1983 until his death in February 2019.

In April 2021, while promoting Chanel’s J12 timepiece, Robbie spoke about her relationship with time in Hollywood and how she felt about being in her 30s versus her 20s.

With her two decades-long career in Hollywood, “[20 years] means you have established yourself a career built on more than what you have to offer on the surface,” she said. “It means you have proven you have talent, good taste, good instincts, you work hard and have thick skin.”

She added that she is fine with getting older. “I often ask people what has been their favorite age to be in their life. The only people who ever say their 20s are people who are still in their 20s,” she said, before referencing French philosopher Paul Nizan’s quote, “I think that infinite possibilities should be considered at any age. We should never stop dreaming big.”
