An Alabama school thinks throwing canned food at school shooters might be an effective defense strategy.
Students at W.F. Burns Middle School are requested to bring canned food to class, not for a food drive, but as a counter attack weapons in active shooter situations, WRBL reported.
Throwing cans is in fact a part of an emergency programme called “ALICE”, that stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate, WRBL reported.
In a letter from the school to parents, adminstrators wrote: “The canned food item could stun the intruder or even knock him out until the police arrive. The canned food item will give the students a sense of empowerment to protect themselves and will make them feel secure in case an intruder enters the classroom”, reports WRBL.
According to WRBL, over 1,500 schools are using the ALICE emergency plan. Students are reminded not to eat their self-defense weapon.
