Captain America: Civil War‘s opening Lagos scene is praised by a military expert. It has been seven years since the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed flick premiered and changed the Avengers forever. While Captain America: Civil War has a lot of memorable scenes, one thing that is often overlooked is its action sequences.
In a new video by Insider, retired US Army officer and urban-warfare researcher John Spencer dissects the Lagos opening scene of Captain America: Civil War and offers notes about the MCU’s depiction of urban warfare. Watch the clip below:
He talks about how helpful drones are and how grounded in reality X-ray visions are. Spencer, however, is specifically impressed by a single scene in Captain America: Civil War featuring Steve Rogers. Read his full quote below:
Although that’s probably unlikely that you’re going to use your Vibranium shield to throw it up in the air, but what it signifies for me is what we call a three-block war, where when you’re fighting in urban terrain, you are actually very concerned about the civilian population and protecting people at the same time as you’re fighting and there are restrictions on what you can or can’t do. So, now, that’s a very plausible scenario that a soldier who has values is trying to protect the civilian population, while still trying to do the mission. So if the rating is for realism, I’ll give it around a six.
Captain America Praise Makes The MCU’s Civil War More Tragic
Marvel Studios did Captain America: Civil War as a set-up to the culmination of the Infinity Saga. The Lagos incident set up a few plot lines that eventually panned out subsequently. That included the break-up of the Avengers, which started with Iron Man and Captain America’s conflict about the Sokovia Accords and then later became personal due to Bucky’s involvement with the death of Howard and Maria Stark.
Until now, the debate about who was actually correct in Captain America: Civil War remains a favorite topic of conversation among fans of the MCU. Regardless of who was right, however, it’s tragic to think about what happened to the Avengers after the film. Spencer’s praise of Steve Rogers, in particular, highlights that at the end of the day, everyone was just trying to do what they believe is right. Unfortunately, the Sokovia Accords painted him as a villain when all he wanted to do was serve humankind.
Captain America: Civil War is by no means a flawless film. Its cinematography and visuals are often criticized for being flat and bland. However, it’s safe to say that it remains to be one of the best movies from the MCU thus far thanks to its gripping storyline, fantastic performances, and how it shaped the ultimate culmination of the Infinity Saga.
