Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has turned out a much lower opening weekend than expected. The movie, which launched in theaters midweek on Wednesday, July 12, is the seventh entry in the long-running franchise, which began with Mission: Impossible in 1996 (a movie that was adapting the iconic 1960s TV series of the same name). The new movie stars Tom Cruise reprising the role of superspy Ethan Hunt alongside an ensemble cast that includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Pom Klementieff.
Per Deadline, the Mission: Impossible 7 box office has fallen far short of the original $90 million domestic projections for its opening weekend. Its current projections land it at a 3-day total of $54.2 million and a 5-day of $78 million, falling behind the total of the lukewarm Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which had a $60 million 3-day and a $83.9 million 5-day. However, international numbers for Mission: Impossible are already looking strong and will likely help prevent the movie from becoming a flop despite its massive production budget of nearly $300 million.
