Disney’s Legacy & Future Explained

After its founding on October 16, 1923, Disney became a leading name in the world of animated shorts. In the 1930s, the company planned its first animated feature film, a decision that was met with some skepticism. The result, however, was 1937’s Snow White, which, despite some financial troubles in the years that followed, ultimately set the studio on a path to becoming the single biggest name in animation.

While animation remains a key pillar of Disney’s success, the company’s expansion through acquisition has largely defined the company’s last 10 years. In addition to 21st Century Fox, Disney now owns both Marvel and Lucasfilm, both of which remain highly valuable. That being said, however, it could be argued that Disney has hit a rough patch in recent years, with animated movies like Lightyear and Strange World underperforming, and both the MCU and Star Wars showing serious signs of strain. That’s not to mention Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bombing in theaters.

Star Wars has, since 2019, remained firmly on the small screen, and nailing the next feature film will be crucial to the franchise’s future. Marvel has also lost some of its magic, and its unclear whether The Marvels will continue this trend. Wish, however, appears to be a return to form for the company in terms of animation. While Disney has perhaps had a disappointing few years in some areas, the last 100 years suggest that the company will remain a pillar of the entertainment industry for decades to come.
