Target Holiday Price Match Policy: How it Works

With holiday sales and Black Friday sales kicking off so early these days, consumers are left with a dilemma: If you buy something that goes on sale early, what if it drops in price even more, later in the season? Are you just out of luck?

Not necessarily, if you bought something at Target and the price later falls at Target. Target is unique in that it offers an extended holiday price match policy.

How Target’s Holiday Price Matching Policy Works

Target’s normal price match policy gives you just 14 days after your purchase to get a price adjustment if the price falls. The holiday price match guarantee gives you longer: Anything you buy at Target from Oct. 22 onwards is eligible for a price adjustment if the price falls at Target stores or on Target.com on or before Dec. 24. Here’s the important fine print:

  • The item must be identical (brand name, size, color, model number).
  • Marketplace items from third-party sellers aren’t eligible.
  • If you are price matching an in-store item, you must request the match from the same store.
  • You must provide proof of purchase. If you have the Target app and scanned your app barcode in-store (or made an online purchase logged in to your account), it’s all stored in there.
  • See all the fine print.

If you’re in a store, ask for a price adjustment at checkout or at guest services. For online purchases, use the chat function. You’ll get the difference refunded to your original form of purchase.

Does Target Price Match Black Friday?

Yes! While some other retailers’ price matching policies exclude Black Friday and Cyber Monday (sometimes the whole week), Target’s holiday price matching policy makes no such exclusions. If something you bought on or after Oct. 22 falls in price on Black Friday, you can totally take advantage of that Black Friday price. That should give early shoppers some peace of mind.

Do Other Retailers Offer Extended Holiday Price Matching?

No. So far, for 2023, Target is the only retailer to offer an extended holiday price match policy. In fact, it’s been the only major retailer to consistently do so since 2020, when it first started offering special holiday price matching.

In 2020, Best Buy offered a more limited holiday price matching guarantee, promising to reimburse shoppers of its special two-day sale if whatever they bought fell in price before Black Friday.

So suffice it to say, special holiday price matching is really only a thing at Target. However, the holiday price match window has grown and shrunk a bit over the years. It lasted from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24 in 2020 and from Oct. 6 to Dec. 24 in 2022.
