What to Buy Presidents Day 2024: How to Shop Smart and What to Expect

Every third Monday of the month of February, the nation celebrates Presidents Day–and what better way to celebrate our founding fathers than with a good sale? Jokes aside, if George and Abe had the opportunity to score some of these deals, I’m positive they would indulge. Especially if they wanted to refurnish the White House, as Presidents Day deals center around furniture, mattresses, appliances and home goods in general.

Presidents Day is one of the best times of the year to shop for home goods. In fact, you won’t likely see comparable savings until Memorial Day. So, if you’ve been meaning to replace that dishwasher, upgrade your mattress or swap out that dinged-up kitchen table, the three-day holiday weekend will be one of your best chances to save on all of that for the next several months.

Here’s a breakdown of the random weekend of savings and what to look out for if you’re on the hunt for something particular or just want to stretch your dollar.

Before you start shopping, if you’re really looking to save every time you shop–not just Presidents Day sales–download Deal Finder, the free browser extension that automatically applies promo codes in your cart so you get the best price out there, every checkout. Don’t forget to activate those Cash Back offers, too! RetailMeNot’s cash-back offers stack with promo codes, so you can save money AND get money back on your Presidents Day shopping.

Presidents Day Mattress Sales

Presidents Day mattress sales are probably the most well-known sales to shop during Presidents Day weekend. While it’s unclear why mattresses are tied to Presidents Day, the savings speak for themselves. Unlike Black Friday and Prime Day when items like electronics and beauty products see their 15 minutes of markdown fame, Presidents Day is the time to make big purchases like a mattress. Retailers like Mattress Firm offer a wide selection of their inventory marked down to some of the lowest prices of the year. Because you’re likely to hold onto a mattress for longer than most electronics, you want to make sure that you’re making a sound investment, especially when it comes to your quality of sleep.

Also be sure to check out online mattress retailers, which tend to offer promo codes for extra discounts the entire week of Presidents Day. Nectar, Purple and Nest are some great online mattress companies to scope out. When you hit those links, be sure to check for cash back offers as well — mattresses are pricey, so that’s a lot of potential cash back, back in your pocket.

Presidents Day Furniture Sales

Moving along with the the home theme that dominates Presidents Day, this three-day weekend is one of the better times of the year to purchase furniture. Many retailers need to make way for seasonal products like outdoor living items and patio furniture, which means that inventory left over from the previous season (and year) need to go–and quickly. Whether you’re looking to update your living room seating for this year’s parties, or you’ve realized after hosting friends and family throughout the holiday season that your home is due for a new guestroom bed or dining room table, now is the time to buy. Popular furniture retailers like Ashley, Wayfair and Bed Bath & Beyond are all set to run competing deals and dueling sale prices.

Presidents Day Home Goods Sales

If it isn’t clear by now that the best Presidents Day sales tend to revolve around items for home, let me be clear: Shop for home items during Presidents Day sales. If you aren’t in the market for a big-ticket item like a mattress and don’t need to refresh any furniture items, Presidents Day sales are still a great time to shop for other home goods like decorations, kitchen gadgets and household items. I like to look for products that will improve my day-to-day life (and home) for the rest of the year like organization pieces.

Since it seems like everyone these days has a well organized pantry and fridge, there are tons of opportunities to score organizing essentials for your home. I always make it a point to check out HomeGoods and T.J.Maxx–they’re my go-to’s for all things home and carry a surprisingly great selection of furniture and accent pieces, too. Not to mention these stores already offer trendy and designer pieces at a discount, so it’s really a no-brainer.

Rugs are another smart home decor category to shop during Presidents Day weekend sales. Large area rugs can get pricey, so a Presidents Day sale, promo code or cash back offer can save you a lot of money.

Presidents Day Appliance Sales

Top deals:

Appliances are a smart Presidents Day weekend buy. That’s because three-day weekends are traditionally a time when retailers mark down appliances drastically and offer appliance bundle deals (extra savings when you buy multiple appliances at once). You’ll also find special financing offers, free delivery and other perks.

If you’re willing to shop open box, check for extra savings. In the past, we’ve seen retailers offer an extra 5% or 10% off clearance and open-box appliances.

Comparison shopping is vital for such a major purchase like this. So weigh your options at Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy. They’re all known for offering competitive appliance deals during Presidents Day.

Presidents Day TV Sales

It’s safe to say that, these days, any major sale weekend or event is a good time to invest in a new TV. Big-box stores like Walmart and Target as well as electronics stores like Best Buy generally include TVs in their Presidents Day sales. Because these retailers price match, you can end up saving money if you play your cards right. If you’re asking for a competitor price match, however, you’ll need to be sure that the lower price you’re seeing is on the same exact model.

Here are a few tips for shopping Presidents Day TV sales:

  • Know which size television you’re looking for to help narrow down choices. Plus, check out PCMag’s list of the top TVs for 2024 to ensure you’re making a good pick.
  • Outline any special features or must-haves like built-in streaming services.
  • Consider brands and read reviews. A good deal does not necessarily mean good quality.
  • Once you have an idea of the TV style or brand, check out competing retailer prices–even if the item isn’t in stock at another retailer, you could receive a price match for the retailer with in-stock product.

What NOT to Buy During Presidents Day Sales

If something you need is on sale, it could very well be a good buy on Presidents Day. However, there are some items to hold off on strategically, if you’re not in a hurry.

Spring Fashion

Spring styles will start hitting the racks right around Presidents Day, and you might see some discounts. However, the discounts will be much larger (50% off or more) near the end of the season in April, when summer clothing starts getting stocked.

Tech

While you might find some good TV deals at electronics stores, hold off a bit on tech, like headphones, laptops, smart home devices, etc. Amazon usually throws its Prime Day sale in July, and all major retailers compete with it. As Prime Day is a tech-heavy sale, Amazon’s competitors will mark down tech as well.

Warm-Weather and Patio Furniture

If you see a patio set on the showroom floor, don’t automatically buy it. Patio items get marked down (think 70% off) toward the end of the season, so resist the temptation.

Tips for Maximizing Your Savings During Presidents Day Sales

When you shop any major sales event (Presidents Day included), saving the absolute most isn’t just about the price tag. You need to make sure you’re not leaving a single promo code on the table. And you’ll want to harness your spending to yield cash back and rewards points for later. If that all sounds like a lot of effort, here’s how to make it all easier:

1. Sign Up for Retailer Reward Programs

Before shopping the sales, sign up for major retailers’ rewards programs. These ones are a good place to start. We highly recommend Target Circle, Walmart Rewards, Kohl’s Rewards and My Best Buy Rewards. All are free to sign up for and allow you to earn rewards points toward future purchases. If you’re shelling out a decent amount for Presidents Day, you might as well put that spending to work.

2. Earn Cash Back

Browse our cash back offers and activate them for one of the easiest ways to save during Presidents Day. Just click on an offer, and you’ll be prompted to sign up for a cash back account, if you haven’t already. Then, just shop as usual, and a percentage of what you spend will be credited back to you automatically.

Cash back offers are great for those times when a retailer just isn’t offering a promo code or sale — you can still get that big-ticket item and get money back in your pocket. And, if you do find a promo code, you can stack it with your cash back offer!

3. Get a Browser Extension That Finds Coupons for You

Some retailers are great about alerting you to promo codes and prompting you to add them at checkout. Others? Not so much. A coupon browser extension will find eligible coupons for you while you shop online and enter them at checkout automatically. You’re saving time and money.
